Mobilising Retail Brands
TeleResources Managing Director Maurie Dobbin is speaking at the upcoming CommunicAsia conference.
Last year the event brought more than 50,349 attendees and 1,677 exhibiting companies from 60 countries together, in a 4-day event
With the advent of high-speed mobile networks and a new generation of feature-rich mobile phones the time has arrived for retail brands to make their presence felt direct to mobile users. Today most brands have their message diffused through their positioning on the portals controlled by mobile phone operators. This positioning has been an outcome of the high data fees imposed on customers that have sought content outside the operator portals and the difficulties in ensuring a pleasurable quality of experience for all users.
In 2007 though we have seen the emergence of all-you-can-eat mobile data plans with multiple Gb of capacity making an off-deck strategy feasible. 2008 is shaping up as the year when major retail brands should be looking to develop their own mobile web strategies independent of the mobile phone carriers. This is similar to the position of the Internet in the mid-90s when the walled gardens of players such as AOL became indefensible and users exercised their will to find the content they needed. The mobile phone of today can offer a rich multi-media experience incorporating text, graphics, audio and video enabling entirely new ways for brands to convey their message.
On Device Portals, mini Java applications that can be installed by the user on most new mobile phones, provide a way for brands to develop new relationship with their customers. These applications avoid the latency issues associated with WAP site interaction while still allowing for content to be refreshed.
New video players are becoming available that will allow mobile phone users to transcode existing Internet videos on-the-fly while Bluetooth and WiFi access networks can enable event and location-based strategies. Mobile advertising is set to become a multi-billion dollar industry.
