launches Express Mobile Card on Next G network

Customers connecting to Telstra's BigPond Wireless Broadband on the Next G network now have a new way to get online, with today's launch of the Wireless Broadband Express Mobile Card. The card is designed for laptops with a 34mm express card slot and is Mac and PC compatible. The Express Card complements other Next G connection options, such as a PCMCIA card and a USB modem.

Snoopa to Wi-Fi NSW South Coast

Snoopa Community has announced plans to build a Metro Wi-Fi mesh network on the NSW South Coast. The network will cover the Shoalhaven and Kiama local government areas, with many towns looking forward to accessing broadband internet for the first time.

QANTAS is the only network airline carrier chosen to conduct in-flight tests of mobile service which will be limited to o e-mail and text, and disable voice services for the first three months of trailing on a domestic route between Australian capital cities.

Chariot pulls out of wireless race

Internet service provider Chariot has determined that wireless is not a core activity and is offloading its wireless subsidiary, Omninet Wireless Pty Ltd only 18 months after acquiring it.

Optus outsources 3G rollout

17 April, 2007

Optus has confirmed it will put out for competitive tender the project to extend its 3G mobile network from 55 per cent to 96 per cent of the population.

Horses for courses

In collaboration with Huwei Technologies, Optus has just completed a trial of a 900MHz mobile network to get a better understanding of its potential to offer greater range in the bush, as opposed to extending the 2100MHz 3G mobile network it uses in city areas.

New Zealand

Telecom New Zealand joins with CSL to expand roaming for WorldMode phone

20 April, 2007

Telecom announced today an agreement with CSL, a leading mobile operator in Hong Kong, which will see Telecom’s WorldMode coverage extend to over 180 countries internationally. The three year agreement which comes into effect mid this year is initially for voice and texting services and will extend to mobile data before the end of 2007. CSL is 76% owned by Telstra.

Last saviour for mobile competition

In light of the reported failures from the Commerce Commission and TelstraClear this week, NZ Communications and its proposal for New Zealand’s third wireless network is being seen by some analysts as a kind of last saviour for competition.

New Zealand-based Plus SMS has successfully negotiated the return of $11 million worth of shares in accordance with the terms of a deed of settlement entered into with former chief executive Mr. Garry Donoghue before he resigned last year.
