The CSIRO are due to commercialise wireless technology that can reach 500 metres underground in the wake of a disaster that recently killed 12 in the United States and the Beaconsfield tragedy in Tasmania last year.

Trees to grow from disused mobile phones

An environmental campaign run by Landcare and MobileMuster, the official recycling program for the Australian Mobile Telecommunication Association (AMTA), is urging mobile subscribers to drop off their disused mobile phones at 1,900 locations throughout Australia by the end of July to see that a new native tree planted.

Mobile jamming also raises legal questions

Considering that devices designed to jam mobile phone networks are illegal under Section 189 of the Radiocommunications Act, 1992, the only legal avenue for the APEC proposal is to rely on the Australian Communications and Media Authority's power to issue exemptions that allow the use of jammers in certain circumstances.

NextG goes pre-paid as CDMA phone sales cease

The transition from Telstra's CDMA network to NextG remains a contentious issue as the telco stops the sale of CDMA phones at a time when a government audit is yet to determine whether the new HSDPA 3G network can offer equivalent or adequate coverage, particularly in rural areas. Telstra has also released prepaid service despite handset shortages and ongoing complaints about the available ones.
