According to chief executive John Porter, Austar has based its decision to engage Nortel to roll out a cost-competitive wireless broadband network to regional areas on the fact that Nortel's WiMax technology "reflects a substantial improvement on the comparable costs, speed and quality of 3G mobile broadband offerings".

The general manager of media and communications for the APEC 2007 taskforce has poured cold water on rumours that it plans to jam mobile networks in areas around President Bush during the APEC Economic Leaders Week in September. However, a number of security measures are already being tested using wireless technology.

Telstra has denounced the federal government's decision to award the regional wireless component of the Broadband Connect project to the OPEL consortium due to the implication that taxpayer's money will be sent offshore to the Singapore parent of Optus.
Federal government to give OPEL consortium the nod for Broadband Connect

The Australian government is expected to announce that the "Broadband Connect" job to build a state-of-the-art broadband network to 99 per cent of the population will be awarded to a group called "OPEL" formed by Optus and Elders, a rural finance company. The broadband network is expected to use a mix of optic fibre, copper-based broadband technology ADSL2-plus and emerging WiMAX wireless technology for more remote areas.
