Going Green

Promoted as Australia's first environmentally friendly mobile telecommunications service, M2 Telecommunications has launched "Green Mobiles" which will contribute 10 cents in every dollar spent by customers into Australian Greenhouse Office-accredited carbon abatement programs, via the Australian Climate Exchange (ACX).

Confirmation that Network's 7 investment company Engin acquired a 10.38 per cent shareholding in Unwired has fueled speculation that Optus will raise a counter-offer for additional shares now that the Broadband Connect project is due to commence.

Reports indicate that Kerry Stoke's long-held ambitions to move into the wireless broadband market are coming to fruition with Network 7 recently acquiring enough shares in Unwired to seek a seat on the board.

Having tried but failed to reach agreement over roaming on Vodafone's network NZ Communications believes that failure to develop more robust regulation or the threat of regulation will kill off mobile competition in New Zealand.

In response to to the Commerce Commission's plan to regulate mobile roaming and facilitate the ability for start ups to use incumbent networks to achieve national coverage Vodafone has put plans to expand its 3G network on hold until the proposed regulation becomes clearer.

Kordia gets hot about Wi-Fi spots

3 September, 2007

In co-operaton with Auckland WiFi firm RoamAD, state-owned enterprise Kordia is launching its own network of WiFi hotspots in direct competition with privately owned telcos that provide wireless Internet connections to customers.

Termination rates begin to fall at Telecom

3 September, 2007

As a result of the Government reaching agreement with Telecom to reduce the cost of mobile termination, the cost of calling from its landlines to all mobile phones is being reduced by an average of three cents per minute.
