NSW government axes free WiFi plan

The New South Wales government has defended its plan to abandon the creation of a free wireless broadband network in Sydney's CBD by pointing to the fact that similar schemes in Chicago, Houston and San Francisco had either been scrapped or were being bailed out by taxpayers because they had failed commercially.
Website leaks iPhone Optus deal

There has been an unsubstantiated website announcement this week that Optus will be one of several Australian mobile service providers to be selling Apple's iPhone with sales and service commencing in the last week of June.
Ericsson calls for spectrum reallocation

In response to the federal Government's review of how spectrum bands are allocated in Australia, Ericsson has stepped in to argue that the spectrum band used by television networks to broadcast sports events or natural disasters should be reallocated to wireless broadband services.
Optus gets political

Accusing the Federal Government of being "seduced" by Telstra, Optus CEO Paul O'Sullivan has not ruled out taking legal action over the cancellation of the billion-dollar OPEL regional broadband deal.
CDMA closes without incident

On the first day that Telstra's CDMA network was turned off there were no calls of complaint reported from the very few customers still connected to the old service.
NSW Police fund own NextG rural service

In what may considered as a perturbing precedent, NSW Police have put up $150,000 to help fund the installation of a communications tower that will provide the Next G service to a region Telstra had once deemed commercially unviable.
